Over the course of the year, I feel as though I have been able to grow as a photographer through the uniqueness and creativity within my photos. Learning the basics of photography at the beginning of the year gave me so many ideas for projects for the future, and I feel as though I was able to incorporate a lot of the basic elements of photography into my photos that made them come out very appealing and well-composed. I love to use the rule of thirds in my photography by placing a person off center and creating a more interesting image with different surroundings that can be seen in the last three photos of my portfolio. Throughout the year I feel s though I took better pictures towards the beginning when I had more time and I really focused on how my photos were coming out before turning them in. Towards the end of the year I was trying to rush everything and I feel as though I did not give my best effort towards my final submissions for some of the projects and I wish that I had spent more time planning these pictures out and trying to make them more original. Even though I do feel as though I have grown throughout the semester as a photographer, I do not feel that my later work exemplifies that as much as I would have liked it to have.
The most important thing that I learned throughout taking this course waste always be original. Try and make every picture your own. Take pictures from all different vantage points, use different props that might not always be found in that traditional setting, play with the lighting, etc. There are many ways to make any image unique and really give it an insight into who you are as a photographer. In "Glass Sunset," all I did was pick up a piece of glass that I found lying on the beach and hold it up to the sunset and it created a unique feel to it with all of the contrasting colors and I feel that it came out to be one of my best photos that I was able to take throughout the whole year. So, if I were to take away one thing from this whole year, it would be to always find some way to make your photography unique, and exemplify you as a person as well as an artist.
I chose these images for my portfolio because I felt as though they were the photos that exemplified me the most out of all of them.I love to take pictures with color and the vibrance of colors is very clear throughout each photograph. I love taking pictures of people because I feel like we as people can really appreciate the beauty of a photo when there is someone, or a part of someone in a photo. My photo "Scenic Blur" is one of my favorite photos that I have taken because I did not have to do anything other than observe my friend as he was taking pictures of nature and the landscape, and yet it is such a well-composed picture just by the small story it tells on it's own. My friends mean a lot to me and I love to incorporate them in my photos, even though there is only one of them in three of the photos in my portfolio. Each picture is unique in it's own way and each photo is beautiful for it's own reasons. That is why I chose these photos for my portfolio.
I like taking pictures of people with a different intriguing background in the back. I like the photos of people because people are able to change their expressions and emotions to give a photograph character. They are able to position themselves to create a whole different feel to a photo than if they were removed from the photo all together. People are the worlds most diverse prop to have in a photo. Humans are beautiful and can always lighten up a photograph. Taking pictures without people is also beautiful whether it be of nature, animals, etc. except that it just makes it more unique to have someone doing a different pose or have a different facial expression while taking that same photo. Not all photographs should always have people within it, however, my favorite photos to take are those that do have people within it. My portfolio really does represent me in many ways as a person and as a photographer and I hope you reading this like it just as much as I do!
